The boy who follows death meets the girl who could cause the apocalypse.

Krishani thinks he’s doomed until he meets Kaliel, the one girl on the island of Avristar who isn’t afraid of him. She’s unlike the other girls, she swims with merfolk, talks to trees and blooms flowers with her touch. What he doesn’t know is that she’s a flame, one of nine individually hand crafted weapons, hidden in the body of a seemingly harmless girl.
Nobody has fallen in love with a flame until now. She becomes Krishani’s refuge from the dreams of death and the weather abilities he can’t control. Striking down thousand year old trees with lightning isn’t something he tries to do, it just happens. When the Ferryman dies, Krishani knows that he’s the next and that a lifetime of following death is his destiny.
And Kaliel can’t come with him. The Valtanyana are hunting the flames, the safest place for her is Avristar. Krishani can’t bear to leave her, and one innocent mistake grants the Valtanyana access to their mystical island. They’re coming for Kaliel, and they won’t stop until every last living creature on Avristar is dead. She has to choose, hide, face them, or awaken the flame and potentially destroy herself.

Rhiannon Paille's Flame of Surrender was AMAZING. Totally gorgeous. It brought me back to the days of fantasy, but of course, this one with romance. I was entranced by the writing, it kept me hooked from page one till the very end.

Love the characters and the whole world which Paille has developed. It's so different and original, and of course, beautiful the way in which the writing describes the setting of which the story takes place. I fell in love– I wanna go there!
I loved the two main characters, Krishani and Kaliel from the moment they came into the book. I really found them to be likeable characters, as they bring about rebellion, going against the laws and rules, like all the great fiction books out there! These two will always be special though...kinda like a fantasy Romeo and Juliet... with more understandable English.

I was hooked onto the book, but the book was pretty long to read. The book kept me up thinking, eager to get back to it again. This had really grabbed my attention!
Sometimes, however, I felt a little confused. With all the names of things and people, of thee different settings– I lost track of where I was at times.
I really like the switch in points of view though. Really good to know what's happening on both sides, as well as having a boy's POV, which you don't really find common in YA fiction!

Overall, I found Flame of Surrender a more than promising beginning to what I hope is a better-than-the-last-book-which-was-already-amazing series. Paille has created something fantastic, that all readers won't be able to resist. Can't wait to find out what happens next!
