Illuminae Bonus Content: Character Profiles + Teaser Video

Hey guys! I’m so excited to share some amazing bonus content from the upcoming release Illuminae by Amie Kaufman and Jay Kristoff, the first in a trilogy–THE ILLUMINAE FILES.

October 20, 2015 ● Goodreads

This morning, Kady thought breaking up with Ezra was the hardest thing she’d have to do.

This afternoon, her planet was invaded.

The year is 2575, and two rival megacorporations are at war over a planet that’s little more than an ice-covered speck at the edge of the universe. Too bad nobody thought to warn the people living on it. With enemy fire raining down on them, Kady and Ezra—who are barely even talking to each other—are forced to fight their way onto an evacuating fleet, with an enemy warship in hot pursuit.

But their problems are just getting started. A deadly plague has broken out and is mutating, with terrifying results; the fleet's AI, which should be protecting them, may actually be their enemy; and nobody in charge will say what’s really going on. As Kady hacks into a tangled web of data to find the truth, it's clear only one person can help her bring it all to light: the ex-boyfriend she swore she'd never speak to again.

Told through a fascinating dossier of hacked documents—including emails, schematics, military files, IMs, medical reports, interviews, and more—Illuminae is the first book in a heart-stopping, high-octane trilogy about lives interrupted, the price of truth, and the courage of everyday heroes.

Every month there’ll be new content released (I’m a little late this month with posting!). This month, Kady’s and Ezra’s character profiles are available on the ILLUMINAE FILES WEBSITE as well as a teaser video:

I’m really looking forward to reading this one–it’s one of the most buzzed-about books this year so far! Be sure to check out the content on the absolutely gorgeous website, and come back later in July for more amazing extras for this awesome new trilogy.

Zephyr Mourning knew she wasn’t a very good Harpy, but she never thought she would be a murderer.

She’d rather watch reality TV than learn forty-seven ways to kill a man, she pretty much sucks at wielding magic, and she was prepared for a future pretending to be a normal human instead of a half-god assassin. But then her sister was murdered–and Zephyr uses a forbidden dark power to save herself from the same fate.

Now Zephyr is on the run from a punishment worse than death when an unexpected reunion with a childhood friend changes everything. It seems that Zephyr might just be the Nyx, a dark goddess that is prophesied to shift the power balance. For hundreds of years the half-gods have lived in fear, and Zephyr is supposed to change that.

But how is she supposed to save everyone else when she can barely take care of herself?

I saw this one AGES ago but I never did get my hands on a copy. Until now. I’m seriously happy I got Promise of Shadows for review because I absolutely loved it. The beginning took me a while to adjust to, in terms of getting an idea of what exactly was going on, but omg–it’s been such a long time since I’d read a book focused on Greek mythology that met modern day (so... urban mythology?). The last book I read focused on this sort of stuff was Fleeced! but that’s aimed at younger readers, so all in all: a YA book that involves Greek myths? It’s practically been a lifetime since I’d read one last. Anyway, back to the main point at hand. THIS BOOK? So beautiful. So dark. And I loved it SO much.

I liked that our main character Zephyr, also known as Peep (which is the most adorable nickname ever), wasn’t the typically strong and flawless main character portrayed so often in young adult fiction. She’s definitely quite flawed and is the kind of person who would rather run than fight in most situations. However, her snappy and sarcastic attitude annoyed me sometimes. I didn’t really enjoy her bursts of anger and quick judgement upon others. Tallon’s got the same problem–both these characters are hot-headed. Otherwise, I totally love them! All the swoons for Tallon, trust me. This book had such an interesting and diverse cast of characters. Blue was a sweet character, and Cass probably had the most interesting background story EVER. I’m grateful that romance wasn’t a big part of the story and instead of spending ages reading about a girl pining for a boy every second of the day, we got a story of a girl with a clear plan in mind that didn’t revolve around said boy.

I am tossed and turned in a sea of pain and rage and disappointment. I reach out, attempting to wield some of my own forbidden power. For a single shining moment the darkness abates, reluctant to hurt me. But it’s pointless. The orbs quickly begins devouring me again, Hades’s intent pushing it forward. My abilities are nothing compared to his, a raindrop trying to attack the ocean.
I surrender to my punishment, going limp as the dark energy tears me apart atom by atom. My last thought before I lose consciousness is relief.
At least I finally know how I die.
–p. 57

This book contained several new mythological terms that were new for me. I think most of them were made up, since I searched up characters such as Ramun Sol and nothing popped up, but there were a few things that I didn’t know about previously. What I love about YA books that allude to mythology is that I always end up learning something new or end up yearning to learn more about the subject. Several things in this book–erebos, vættirÆthereals–had me curious to know more.

Promise of Shadows was a seductive and thrilling ride with a touch of well-timed snark guaranteed to make readers laugh. Justina Ireland brilliantly weaves fiction and myth to create a truly unique story. Delightfully dark and filled with jaw-dropping twists, be sure to pick this one up as soon as you possibly can.

Horror has a new name: introducing Courtney Alameda.

Micheline Helsing is a tetrachromat—a girl who sees the auras of the undead in a prismatic spectrum. As one of the last descendants of the Van Helsing lineage, she has trained since childhood to destroy monsters both corporeal and spiritual: the corporeal undead go down by the bullet, the spiritual undead by the lens. With an analog SLR camera as her best weapon, Micheline exorcises ghosts by capturing their spiritual energy on film. She's aided by her crew: Oliver, a techno-whiz and the boy who developed her camera's technology; Jude, who can predict death; and Ryder, the boy Micheline has known and loved forever.

When a routine ghost hunt goes awry, Micheline and the boys are infected with a curse known as a soulchain. As the ghostly chains spread through their bodies, Micheline learns that if she doesn't exorcise her entity in seven days or less, she and her friends will die. Now pursued as a renegade agent by her monster-hunting father, Leonard Helsing, she must track and destroy an entity more powerful than anything she's faced before . . . or die trying.

Lock, stock, and lens, she’s in for one hell of a week.

Here’s a fair warning: do NOT read this book at night. I had vivid dreams after finishing this one at midnight and they were filled with creepy things chasing me, attacking me, and then finishing me off.

That being said,
I LOVED Shutter.

I was a little hesitant to start this one because of the size of the book. It’s actually not that thick but since I haven’t been reading many “long” books recently, I will admit that I almost didn’t pick this one up. But me being me and convincing myself that I SHOULD read this one because it’s an ARC and this summer is all about finishing books that I didn’t get to read before, I finally got to reading it. And I didn’t stop. All the way till the end. In one sitting. Even when that meant reading it at late hours when the rest of the house had gone to sleep and I was still awake with one light on.

As you can probably tell, I get freaked out by horror quite easily. Movies, oh sweet heaven, I can’t bear. I can watch any other genre except horror. Okay, well that’s not fair. I can watch it with the volume on very low and my hands covering my eyes except for a prime peaking spot between two fingers. Books on the other hand? I don’t get as freaked out as I do with movies, but this one certainly did me in. Maybe it’s the fact that films have visuals and sound–you must admit, that music is pretty damn scary sometimes *shudders*. But I do love books with super dark twists, particularly psychological thrillers with unexpected endings. Anyway, if Shutter is ever going to become a movie, I will definitely watch it. Through my fingers covering my eyes, of course.

I must have not read the blurb carefully – I didn’t know there was a connection between Shutter and Dracula by Bram Stoker. Must have skipped the line about the Van Helsing lineage, whoops. By the first few pages though, this was made apparent and I had a total freak-out moment. In high school I read Dracula along with Frankenstein for one of my final essays and had to look at gothic themes and literary devices. Stoker’s novel is utterly terrifying during certain parts, but this one had ghosts and other creepy creatures in this book (one of them reminding me of one of Hannibal’s human corpse creations on the TV show Hannibal) which made it even more so. I loved the allusions in Alameda’s novel to the classic text and mentally high-fived myself for knowing some of the references in the story.

I loved all the characters in this story. Micheline (cool name right?) was so kickass. I obviously wouldn’t be as gutsy as she is because she does some pretty risky things in this book and knowing me, I would have run the other way. RY– *swoon*. Wait, sorry lemme try that again: RY– *fans self from heart palpitations*. RYD– *fangirl screech* RY– *sobbing because he’s fictional and will never be mine*. *deep breath* RYDER *faints from over-fangirling and all the swooning*. Annndddd...I’m sure that’s all you need to know about his character.

Jude and Oliver were such great characters as well. Jude was absolutely hilarious and Oliver was such a sweet geek with a lot of heart. However, I had some mixed feelings about Len Helsing, who is Micheline’s dad. It’s necessary that he is such a character that’s stubborn, and once you peel back the layers and look into their past it all makes sense, so I ended up feeling pretty bad for him. Also, I don’t know why, but I kept imagining him as JR Bourne. Possibly because I’ve watched too much Teen Wolf recently (if there is such a thing as “too much Teen Wolf”), but it’s also the fact that in the show Bourne plays this supernatural creature hunter, much like Len Helsing, and he’s also Alison’s (the main female character) dad. Too many similarities for me not to make this comparison while reading Shutter.

I loved the ending as it was, but if there’s ever going to be a sequel, I SO wouldn’t mind it. The author told me (in a tweet) that there’s not going to be but obviously she’d love to write one... maybe someday. I’m gonna keep my finger’s crossed! Deliciously creepy and filled with body-shuddering descriptions, Shutter will guarantee nightmares and the need for more books by Courtney Alameda.

Under the Lights by Dahlia Adler

Josh Chester loves being a Hollywood bad boy, coasting on his good looks, his parties, his parents' wealth, and the occasional modeling gig. But his laid-back lifestyle is about to change. To help out his best friend, Liam, he joins his hit teen TV show, Daylight Falls...opposite Vanessa Park, the one actor immune to his charms. (Not that he's trying to charm her, of course.) Meanwhile, his drama-queen mother blackmails him into a new family reality TV show, with Josh in the starring role. Now that he's in the spotlight—on everyone's terms but his own—Josh has to decide whether a life as a superstar is the one he really wants.

Vanessa Park has always been certain about her path as an actor, despite her parents' disapproval. But with all her relationships currently in upheaval, she's painfully uncertain about everything else. When she meets her new career handler, Brianna, Van is relieved to have found someone she can rely on, now that her BFF, Ally, is at college across the country. But as feelings unexpectedly evolve beyond friendship, Van's life reaches a whole new level of confusing. And she'll have to choose between the one thing she's always loved...and the person she never imagined she could.

I think I didn’t read the blurb carefully enough because I didn’t realise that this was more of a New Adult novel than Young Adult until I’d started reading the book. I don’t typically read NA books–in fact I stay away from them most of the time–but with this one I decided to just plunge in and take a chance. And I’m so, so, so glad I did. I really enjoyed this one, and I wish that I’d read the first book Behind the Scenes before I read this one, even though I didn’t need to. It would definitely help to read the first book, because so many of the characters crossover into this one, even though the focus shifts from Ally and Liam to Josh and Van, but you don’t need to. This book is definitely aimed at older readers for sure though because of language and sexual content.

I don’t know exactly how I feel about Josh’s character. Even though he seems to fit under the d-bag category, there’s something more that just makes you pause just before you banish him to douche territory. He objectifies women, which really pissed me off, but there was definitely character growth. Not too much, but just enough for me to see him differently. I really liked Van’s character though. I enjoyed seeing her personal growth and how she comes to terms with her sexuality. It was actually pretty interesting to see not that not only is she a POC but also a lesbian. This book does bring up the fact that POC, Asians in this instance, tend not to get main roles. This is SO TRUE. It’s only now that people have started to address this, and while there are a few changes and a few revolutionary shows and films that have started bringing in other backgrounds and races into the mix, it’s still in the baby-stages. Vanessa’s struggle with trying to balance her public and private world felt very real at times, and I’m so glad that Adler not only acknowledges it because makes it the central point of the story.

After reading this one, I’m kind of thinking about pursuing more New Adult books. Not at the moment, but maybe in the near future because Under the Lights was a such a great read. Aspiring actors, Hollywood fanatics, TV lovers, drama queens, diversity advocates–EVERYONE will find something they love when reading Dahlia Adler’s book. Now, excuse me while I desperately try to get my hands on the first book because I’ve fallen for the world of glitz, glamor and Daylight Falls.

Waiting on Wednesday – Week 146

Waiting on Wednesday is a weekly meme hosted by Jill at Breaking the Spine. It’s to spotlight upcoming reads that I’m DYING to get my hands on!

This week’s WoW is:
The Wolf Wilder by Katherine Rundell

Feodora and her mother live in the snowbound woods of Russia, in a house full of food and fireplaces. Ten minutes away, in a ruined chapel, lives a pack of wolves. Feodora's mother is a wolf wilder, and Feo is a wolf wilder in training. A wolf wilder is the opposite of an animal tamer: it is a person who teaches tamed animals to fend for themselves, and to fight and to run, and to be wary of humans.

When the murderous hostility of the Russian Army threatens her very existence, Feo is left with no option but to go on the run. What follows is a story of revolution and adventure, about standing up for the things you love and fighting back. And, of course, wolves.

September 9, 2015 ● Goodreads

I don’t think I’ve ever posted a middle grade novel as one of my WoW picks! Anyway, this one looks and sounds absolutely gorgeous. I’ve heard a lot of amazing things about Rooftoppers, which unfortunately I haven’t read yet despite the book sitting on my shelf. I definitely need to pick this one up when it comes out. Fairy tale-esque stories set in Russia are often beautifully told (Blood Red, Snow White by Marcus Sedgewick, anyone?), so I can’t wait to read this one!

What are you waiting on?

Best Dressed: Beautiful Dresses on YA Covers

On the covers of YA books, gorgeous dresses have been a trend for a while. We’ve all seen it, from The Luxe by Anna Godbersen to The Selection by Kiera Cass. Long flowing gowns from sophisticated shades of pink to shocking bouts of bright blue. Here’s a look at some of the best dressed covers in young adult fiction, and for the sake of keeping this post short(er), it’s going to be books that I’ve read.

The Selection by Kiera Cass

My Reviews:
The Selection ••• The Elite ••• The One

Of course, this is the top of my list. I haven’t read The Heir yet, but this series is one of my favourite series. EVER. And of course, that in part has to do with the b-e-a-utiful covers.

Favourite dress: The Selection

The Luxe by Anna Godbersen

This is probably one of the first series that started the beautiful dresses cover trend. It’s definitely the first book series (I’m looking at you, Rumors) that made me long for such gorgeous dresses.

Favourite dress: Rumors

Fallen by Lauren Kate

My Reviews:
Fallen ••• Torment

Like The Selection series, I’ve only read the first three books in this series, but a re-read is in order because I don’t remember much of Fallen except for the bare basics. Anyway, love how dark these covers are and love even more how gorgeous (and matchy) these dresses are.

Favourite dress: Torment

Something Strange and Deadly by Susan Dennard

My Reviews:

Historical YA brings about some of the best dressed books, right? I’m seriously digging how different these dresses are from each other, despite the covers having a similar layout and style.

Favourite dress: Strange and Ever After

The Madman’s Daughter by Megan Shepherd

My Reviews:

Bared shoulders is definitely a trend with this series! But also love how different the dresses are from each other in terms of style and colour. So sad this series is over. Can’t wait to start her new book!

Favourite Dress: Her Dark Curiosity

The Lone City by Amy Ewing

My Review:

The second book isn’t out yet, but I have it on my kindle. While I had some *minor* issues with the first book, there’s no denying that this is one good looking series.

Favorite dress: The Jewel

For Darkness Shows the Stars by Diana Peterfreund

My Review:

You may have noticed that there’s kind of a trend going on at the moment: amazing series of which I’ve only read the first book. THESE DRESSES. Grrr, the first cover has had me dreaming of a star-inspired sparkly dress for ages now.

Favorite dress: For Darkness Shows the Stars

Woodcutter Sisters by Alethea Kontis

My Review:

I’m seriously taking a look over at all these books and getting a huge feeling of “why haven’t I finished these series yet.” I loved this fairytale-esque series and the beautiful covers that go along with it.

Favorite dress: Enchanted

Legacy by Cayla Kluver

My Reviews:
Legacy ••• Allegiance

Oh man, I totally forgot about these books. I LOVE this trilogy. Well, I’ve only read two out of three books but still. Dang it, now I really want to know how it all ends! Anyway, absolutely fantastic dresses featured on the covers here.

Favorite dress: Allegiance

Steampunk Chronicles by Kady Cross

My Review:

I really am terrible, you know. All these amazing series and yet I didn’t finish them. I kinda hate myself at this point, lol. Besides the third book, this whole series’s covers all feature gorgeous dresses with a steampunk twist, kind of like the Something Strange and Deadly series.

Favorite dress: The Girl in the Steel Corset

The Vespertine by Saundra Mitchell

My Review:

I didn’t include the last book of this trilogy because the model wasn’t wearing a dress. Again, I’ve only read the first book of this series. Love the contrast in dresses between these two covers!

Favorite dress: The Vespertine

The Princesses of Westfalin by Jessica Day George

My Review:

Again, first book only. But good gods, THOSE DRESSES. Having serious jealousy here people.

Favorite dress: Princess of the Midnight Ball

These Broken Stars by Amie Kaufman & Meagan
••• My ReviewGoodreads •••
Shatter Me by Tahereh Mafi
••• Goodreads •••
Pretty Amy by Lisa Burstein
••• My Review ● Goodreads •••

I know that all three of these books are in a series, but they’re the only book in their series that features a dress on the cover. That cover for Shatter Me isn’t even used anymore! All three covers have pretty flouncy dresses, just the way I like them *dreamy sigh*.

**UPDATE**

I just found out that the cover for Their Fractured Light (Goodreads) has been released recently and the dress is GORGEOUS.

The Revenge Playbook Blog Tour: Review + Giveaway

The Revenge Playbook by Rachael Allen

In this poignant and hilarious novel, Rachael Allen brilliantly explores the nuances of high school hierarchies, the traumas sustained on the path to finding true love, and the joy of discovering a friend where you least expect.

Don’t get mad, get even!

In the small town of Ranburne, high school football rules and the players are treated like kings. How they treat the girls they go to school with? That’s a completely different story. Liv, Peyton, Melanie Jane, and Ana each have their own reason for wanting to teach the team a lesson—but it’s only when circumstances bring them together that they come up with the plan to steal the one thing the boys hold sacred. All they have to do is beat them at their own game.

Brimming with sharp observations and pitch-perfect teen voices, fans of Jenny Han and Sarah Mlynowski are sure to fall head-over-heels for this sharp tale—by the author of 17 First Kisses—about the unexpected roads that can lead you to finding yourself.

If you know me, you’ll know that I’m a fan of revenge stories: Burn for BurnPretty Little LiarsWicked Games–you name it. There’s something about the drama and the motivation behind revenge that attracts me to such stories like mosquitoes to a light. If you know me, you’ll also know that I’m a sucker for cute contemporaries. This book, The Revenge Playbook? A PERFECT BLEND OF BOTH. I read 17 First Kisses, Rachael Allen’s other contemporary novel, last year, and while I enjoyed it, it wasn’t the best. However, this one was is AMAZING in comparison. It reminded me so much of John Tucker Must Die to the point where I was constantly singing or humming “Dirty Little Secret” by The All-American Rejects (no joke).

I’m not a huge football fan...in fact, I barely know anything about it. People often have to specify or clarify for me when they mention football whether they mean soccer or American football. Anyway, it was kind of weird for me how a sports team can dominate the school (or even the whole town). It kind of resonates with the image that American high school TV shows depicts of the social hierarchy: footballers and cheerleaders rule the school. This book pushed this even further to the point where they basically got away with everything, so this was a totally new extreme for me.

I truly enjoyed the different narratives – both the shift in perspectives (or narrative voice) as well as the time frame, as the novel shifts from past to present. It really felt as though all the girls got equal “page-time” as there seemed to be no main character but rather main characters. Usually when it comes to books with multiple perspectives, I end up only liking some of the characters. However, with this book, I ended up loving all of the featured perspectives. Granted, each girl has their own flaws, but I couldn’t help but fall in love with all of them. Liv, Peyton, Mel-Jay and Ana all bring their own personalities to the table and there was a definite sense of girl power. I love, love, love the feminist tone here. Most of the time, I was like YES. PREACH THAT SHIZZ. These girls, they speak out against slut-shaming, abuse, bullying, rape culture, the way women are treated by men, and so much more.

There’s no doubt about it: this was one of my favourite books this year. The Revenge Playlist was funny and creative, as well as sincere in its message to readers. We need more books like this one, to speak up for girls and women who have been subjected and treated badly by boys and men. Rachael Allen’s sophomore novel speaks volumes about a variety of pertinent issues in our society today, and I’m really looking forward to reading more from her.
